How to Prepare for Your Microblading Appointment

Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that enhances your brows, giving them a fuller, more defined appearance. Proper preparation is crucial to ensure optimal results and smooth healing. Whether you're a first-timer or a returning client, these microblading prep tips will help you get ready for your appointment with confidence.

  1. Skincare Prep & Setting the Perfect Canvas

Your skin's condition plays a significant role in how well the pigment is retained. Follow these skincare guidelines to prepare:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning for at least two weeks before your appointment, as burned or overly tanned skin can affect pigment retention.

  •  Refrain from using retinol, exfoliants, and chemical peels on your forehead and brows for at least two weeks before your session—these can make your skin too sensitive and impact retention.

  •  Keep your skin hydrated but avoid using heavy oils or serums on the brow area in the days leading up to your appointment.

If you have any skin conditions (eczema, acne, psoriasis) around the brow area, consult your microblading artist beforehand to determine if it's safe to proceed.

2. Medications & Supplements to Avoid

Certain medications and supplements can increase bleeding, affecting pigment absorption. Here’s what to avoid:

  • Blood-thinning medications like aspirin or ibuprofen—avoid for 48 hours before your procedure (unless medically necessary—consult your doctor if unsure).

  • Alcohol—avoid for at least 24 hours before your appointment to minimize bleeding and pigment dilution.

  • Caffeine—avoid for 3 hours before your appointment for best numbing results.

  • Fish oil, vitamin E, and other supplements that thin the blood—try to avoid these for at least a week before your session.

  • Antibiotics—wait at least 72 hours (3 days) after your last dose before your cosmetic tattoo, as they can affect healing and retention.

Steroids—depending on the type, steroids have a half-life of 12–72 hours, so to be safe, wait 4 days after your last dose before your cosmetic tattoo.

3. Grooming & Beauty Treatments

To ensure your brows are in the best shape for microblading, follow these tips:

  • Do not wax, thread, or pluck your brows for at least a week before your appointment. It may be tempting, but during the service your artist will properly shape and perfect your brows.

  • Avoid getting Botox or fillers near the brow area for at least two weeks before cosmetic tattoo.

Skip facials, microdermabrasion, and laser treatments for at least two weeks before your session to prevent skin irritation.

4. What to Expect on Appointment Day

The day of your microblading session is finally here! Here’s what you should do:

  • Arrive with a clean face—avoid makeup, especially on and around your brows.

  • Wear comfortable clothing—your appointment can take 2-3 hours, so dress accordingly.

  • Eat a light meal beforehand to prevent dizziness or discomfort.

  • Bring a reference photo of your desired brow shape and color to discuss with your technician.

Be prepared for slight redness or swelling immediately after the procedure—this is completely normal.

Bonus! Aftercare Prep

Planning ahead can make your healing process much easier. Before your appointment:

  • Stock up on aftercare essentials like Dial Gold or Tattoo Goo and saran wrap. (can we affiliate link these?)

Avoid booking important events for at least a week post-procedure, as your brows will go through a healing phase.
