How to Make Your Cosmetic Tattoo Last

While tattoos are usually considered permanent, cosmetic tattoos can fade if they are not taken care of correctly! Cosmetic tattoos can look and age differently depending on hair color, skin, type, aftercare, and lifestyle. Additionally, cosmetic tattoos take a bit more effort to look beautiful, but by using these tips, your cosmetic tattoo will last much longer.

1. Check Your Skincare

Steer clear of rapid skin exfoliants like Retinol, Glycolic Acid (AHA), Lactic Acid (AHA), and Salicylic Acid (BHA). These acid-based products can travel to your brow area and fade your beautiful brows in as little as 2-3 months. If you can’t live without your exfoliants, wait two weeks before resuming your routine and create a “barrier” on your brows with petroleum jelly. Also look out for bleaching agents, like benzoyl peroxide, as it can lighten the color of your brows.

2. Come to Your Perfecting Session

Don’t skip your perfecting session! At the appointment, we will go over any healing issues or additional work to the area. This follow-up appointment is crucial for ensuring your cosmetic tattoo looks its best and lasts longer.

3. Hands Off!

We know it’s tempting, but resist the urge to pick at your brows. Picking can lower retention and increase the risk of scarring. Let them heal naturally for the best results.

4. Avoid Heavy Sweating

For at least one week after your tattoo, avoid heavy sweating. Sodium in sweat works to break down cosmetic pigments. Additionally, sweat pushes pigment out of the dermis before it has time to create a substantial bond. It can also enter unwanted bacteria into the area. Refraining from workouts 7 days post-tattoo is crucial to allow your new brows to create the bond they need within the dermis for best health results/ retention.

5. Sun Protection is Key

Protect your cosmetic tattoo from the sun. Use a mineral sunscreen, scan ingredient lists for rapid exfoliants, and wear a hat when you’re out and about. The sun’s UV rays can break down the pigment, so keep those brows shaded! This goes for before your appointment as well, as tanning makes your skin exfoliate rapidly.

By following these tips, you’ll keep your cosmetic tattoo looking fresh for much longer. Remember, a little extra care goes a long way in maintaining your beautiful brows.
